Cucumbers are easy, easy, easy. I make sure to have cucumbers in my veggie garden every year. I start mine from seed but you can buy the plants from your local greenhouse and start that way too. When you are growing from seed just sow the seed in fertile well drained soil after all danger of frost is gone. This can be done in spring to early summer. You can grow cucumbers in hills . Just place four to six seeds five to six inches apart. Cover with a half inch of soil, firm the soil lightly and keep moist.
Or you can grow them in rows like I do. Just sow your seeds three to six inches apart. If you choose to grow your cucumbers on a fence or trellis just make sure your plants are four to five inches apart.
Once your seeds are sowed it will take seven to fourteen days for your seedlings to emerge depending on the quality of your soil and weather conditions. If you are growing your seeds in a hill manner it is time to thin them. Once your plants reach six to eight inches long just pull out all but the three strongest in each hill.
Now just water your plants every few days and watch them grow. In about 55 days you will be able to start harvesting. One quick note. Make sure to plant these with a trellis or on the edge of your garden or the vines will spread and take over your garden. I made this mistake my first year and my cucumbers ended up around my tomato plants making harvesting complicated.
But don’t let this detour you. Cucumbers are a great addition to your garden and are very easy to maintain. I add them to salads and I love pickles. So I make sure to grow enough to make a few jars of pickles every year.
On an ending note you can start your seeds indoors if you like to get a jump on your growing season. I start mine indoors six weeks before the last frost and it has really helped to get the quantity of cucumbers that I need to make my pickles. So give these little veggies a try they are so easy it is unbelievable. It is also a great plant to let the children help with my boys absolutely love to help me in the veggie garden. They are so proud when we serve something for supper that they have helped grow.
